Texas In the House. Lisa, Josh & Sara.

Texas Friends in the House: Part I

Our Texas friends Josh and Sarah made arrangements to travel with me to the San Blas islands a few months ago.  But, life has a way of throwing in little surprises.  The day before we were scheduled to leave, my friend Lisa (the ultimate traveler) decided to come with us.  I love her sense of adventure.

The three of us took two flights to Panama city and caught our hotel shuttle to Riande Aeroporto where we were to stay the night.  The Kuna only take clients into San Blas in the morning and we had missed the morning pickup when our flight arrived at 1400.  The hotel is located in an industrial area right by the highway and did not look like much as we approached.  But inside it was lovely! They had a great pool and restaurant.  A life size chess set, huge connect four game, and lots of lounge areas.  We were transported to another place!  The rooms and lobby were very modern and clean.  Very nice place.

We hopped in a cab to find a market, which was in a mall of course.  Off to the MetroMall to find some supplies.  The San Blas “markets” are small and have very limited products, so having a chance to go to a real grocery store is a treat.   Josh captured the bumper sticker on our taxi cab which cracked us up!

After picking up a few basics we headed back to enjoy our hotel.

The next day we got up before dawn to meet our 4×4 vehicle which was to take us to Port Bosuken where we would catch our panga ride back to the boat.

We arrived a little early to our destination and waited by the car for our panga to arrive.  Two other people joined us for the panga ride and off we went.  It is a lot more fun to make this journey with friends!

Sugar Shack was located in the Eastern Lemon Cays at Yansaladup.   Very few boats anchor here as it is surrounded by coral and reefs.

Matt had the ginormous Texas flag flying, making Sugar Shack easy to spot, a birthday sign-up in the cockpit, and had made up both rooms for our guests.  We went to shore, after our friends got settled into their cabins.

We bought some beer and goofed off a bit on this beautiful little island.  They had a pet pig (who was a bit on the skinny side) and 3 rescued baby turtles.  They planned on releasing the baby turtles once they were strong enough.

After we had our fun on this deserted island, we headed back to the boat.  Everyone enjoyed some water time as I baked some cookies.  No swimming for me with stitches and a new tattoo.

Our friends on “Element” came over for a sundowner and met our Texas friends.  They invited all of us over for pancake breakfast the next day.  Matt made some scrumptious pork chops for dinner as we settled in for the night.

TEXAS FRIENDS IN THE HOUSE – CONTINUES…STAY TUNED FOR PART II & III

50th Birthday Celebration

Austin Part II: The Celebration

Austin has been my home for well over 20 years and has enabled me to amass many, many amazing friends.  But, living remotely and out of the country makes it challenging to stay in touch. Why?  Well because, frankly, life gets in the way.  Yet somehow, my group of friends forgives my absences, supports my failures, and celebrates my successes.

Heather Newby organized an enormous 50th birthday celebration bringing together friends from the past and present.  Matt and Diana Barker hosted it at their beautiful home, made brisket, provided a host of apps and beverages, and many others supplied drinks for the bar.  It was a spectacular party and a great opportunity to catch up with my long lost Austin friends.

Diana and Matt had a giant “50” balloon sign out in the front yard, just so people knew where the party was.  She did not even know that I had always wanted something like this – loved it!

Diana truly made me feel like a princess - even the day after!

Heather Newby made the most delicious carrot cake and Diana hired a piano player.

Lisa Wood created a beautiful photo montage from a collection of photos that our friends sent in.  I’d publish it, but it is a huge file.

Daniel is famous for his birthday poems even though he had “retired” many years ago.  Somehow, Heather convinced him to come out of retirement for one more poem.  See entire poem below and see live recording on my Facebook page posted 1/13/18 from Lisa.

Daniel overwhelmed me with his spectacular poem.

It was truly overwhelming to see so many happy, fabulous people come together for a celebration.  I am humbled to be surrounded by such love.

Lucky girl that I am to call these people my friends.

POEM by Daniel Dolce

Lordy, Lordy look who’s…shit, you’re not 40!

Let’s try this again…

Back from the Ocean Blue

So, Happy Birthday to you

Got a pretty sweet lookin tan

Good to have you back on dry land

A year on a boat with Matt?

How they hell did you manage that?

I mean, I know you two are married…

Really, no thoughts…to leave him out there buried?

Back with friends for just a spell

The time away has done you well

You’re looking awful nifty

Even though, you’re 50

We’ve missed you very much

Though never really out of touch

We Love you with all our power

Well…now that you’ve had a shower

Raise a glass to Christine

So lovely and pristine

Keep on drinkin that whiskey

And we’ll do this again when you’re 60!

 Special Thank You:

  • Matt and Diana for hosting my birthday party
  • Heather for organizing it and for making the cake
  • Wayne, Sharon P., Michelle J. for coming into Austin
  • Lisa for making the video montage
  • Michelle M. for letting me stay at Casa Martin

La la land: The City of Angeles

Returning back to Los Angeles or as I affectionately call it “la la land” (way before the movie came out) is always exciting because I get to see my family!  It makes it especially nice because my sister lives in Hermosa Beach with a beautiful view of the beach and ocean – so I am not too disconnected from Matt and the boat.  I call it la la land because I can go around saying “la la la” with no responsibilities other than seeing my family and enjoying life.

After a few hours of sleep, my nephews, Cole and Cameron, and my sister and I made a plan – we are headed to Santa Monica Pier!  Even though it is only about 11 miles from Hermosa Beach, it will take us about an hour to get there with traffic – during the day at 11am in the morning.

Santa Monica Pier has a huge merry-go-round, tons of games, vintage stores, eateries, and of course lots of shopping.  The boys wanted to take me to Bruxie, where you can get a waffle sandwich.  It is a complete novelty in Los Angels being the health nuts that they are to get anything on a waffle sandwich, but for us Texans its not out of the ordinary.  I had my first chicken waffle sandwich at a SXSW event many moons ago, but it is not something I have often.  I wanted to see what a la la land would do to this special dish.

They did it well!  Let me tell you they had vegetarian, chicken, and mushroomsandwiches all on waffles.  It was very tasty and very worthy of a Texas tradition!

Overstuffed, we headed to the Santa Monica Promenade to check out the shops.  It always amazes me how LA gets the newest stores and the latest trends that won’t hit Texas for months or quarters, and won’t hit the islands for years, if at all.  Not that I need to be on “trend” anymore, but it is kind of cool.  We found a new store called RH Baby and Child that was part of Restoration Hardware family and it was spectacular.  They had some of the most beautiful rooms, décor, and furniture.  We had a little fun with some of their accessories.

Next stop is the famous merry-go-round.  Kimberly and I used to come here as kids as my mother loved the merry-go-round.  The boys were not 100% sold on actually getting on the ride, but we didn’t give them a choice!

Cameron quickly claimed the goat, Cole hopped on the pig and sis and I just grabbed horses nearby.  It was surprisingly faster than we remembered.

A fun and fabulous day in Los Angeles!

Kimberly arranged for a pre-birthday celebration on Saturday night at a local eatery.  She brought balloons, candles, décor, and a tasty cake.  A few good friends, a delicious meal, and lots of libations had by all!  Check out the white roses that she dipped in gold glitter – love these special touches!

The bar joined in singing “happy birthday” and I got a naked furry belly showing from a random drunk guy.  La la land always provides some funny entertainment.

The next day, our family came over to celebrate a batch of birthdays.  Unfortunately, the flu held Donna, Diana, and Mark back (my aunts and uncle), but we made the best of it.  Kimberly made her famous chili, decorated the house and we ate and feasted our hearts.  Top: Troy, Uncle Joe, Cameron and Cole, 2nd row: Me and Matt and Uncle Joe, 3rd row: Me, Kimberly and Dad, last row: Uncle Matt and Dad and Kimberly and Dad.

It is always hard to leave my family, especially knowing I won’t get to see most of them for over a year.  But my heart leaves full of love, my mind if full of new memories, and my soul is overflowing with laughter.

Thank you, Sissy for making this a wonderful 50th pre-celebration.
